Cinematic Considerations – You Hurt My Feelings

Plot: “A novelist’s longstanding marriage is suddenly upended when she overhears her husband giving his honest reaction to her latest book.” -IMDB

Review: You Hurt My Feelings, starring Tobias Menzies as Don and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Beth, focuses on those harmless little lies we tell each other in our romantic, platonic, and professional relationships. On the surface, these lies are harmless, but when the truth about how Don views Beth’s latest book is overheard, all hell breaks loose. Heartbroken, we watch as the two swim through the complicated and muddy waters of truth.

For many of us, our work serves as a point of pride. For Beth, she is a wife, a mother, and then a writer. After her memoir failed to reach a large audience, we meet a woman who is unsure of herself. Failing to meet her grand expectations, she adds a greater sense of pressure to her next book. Needing reassurance and some help to rebuild her confidence, she turns to the one person whose support means the most to her.

In a conversation she should have never heard, Beth overhears Don’s true feelings about the new book. This honest feedback destroys her. Already struggling with her pride, a lack of trust makes its way to the pile. Watching Don and Beth rebuild trust between them, you might think about your own relationships. I sure did.

Great relationships succeed because of open and honest communication. Those of us who belong to creative fields often tie so much of how we see ourselves to our work. When we seek feedback, it becomes nearly impossible to divorce our ego from criticism. In our romantic relationships, our partners know this. It makes honest feedback a challenging task. This film wrestles with this truth, unlike any other film I have watched.

For all that it gets right about relationships, resolution, and truth, the film has some challenges. The pacing of the first half of the film can feel odd. From the trailer alone, we know we are building toward an overheard conversation, however, we have no idea how we will get there. For the entire first half of the film, the story doesn’t know either. This is something I found rather distracting.

Another challenge for me was the restraints placed on Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character. I was not expecting her to reprise a version of her award-winning performance in Veep, but I was expecting the comedic reins to be held a little less tightly.

Beyond these issues, I still recommend you spend some time with this film. It has profound things to say about relationships, reconciliation, and aging together. It left me with a lot to consider about my own relationship.

Be good to each other,

Dungeons and Drag Queens

By Mic R Phone

Okay, I have to tell you about this…the other day I was minding my own business, which is hard for me to do because I like being annoying and getting in other people’s business, but I was just going through emails and BAM!!  “What?”  I said to myself… (yeah i do that and I hate it when I say something that I do not want to hear, oops off topic),  I was reading emails and BAM, oops repeating now, okay, here it is;  Dungeons and Drag Queens at The Bing in Spokane! Yep, that is what I said  “What?” With my mouth wide open and my fingers typing away I had to look this up.

This is what I found: Seattle comedian has lost his mind and forced Drag Queens to sit still on stage and play Dungeons and Drag Queens night after night for the amusement of all who watch. The horror of it all! Drag Queens sitting, what is the world coming too? After a few minutes of sobbing and trying to plan how I was going to rescue those poor Drag Queens, I decided I was going to have words with that comedian, Paul Curry.

Being secretive and sneaky I pretended to be a top-notch journalist and started to drill him with my cunning questions..

TQC:   I am not a gamer and never played D&D because I thought it would not be fun, but after watching clips of you and the Drag queens I am a converted player. Tell us what started you down the path of this way of playing D&D?

Paul: I was also into improv and theater, as well as fantasy and gaming culture. For example in my childhood, I would play, now-forgotten, Warcraft 3 custom maps like Life of a Peasant where I would roleplay living in a city with 12 online strangers when I was 13, it was very normal.

TQC: Give us some more insight into who Paul is.  What makes you tick, give us the”T”

Paul: I, like many comics of my ilk, am on a never-ending quest to achieve external validation. I also want to better the world with my actions, since that’s the only way to fend off my existential dread. I am also considering getting a cat, this would be a big move for me.

TQC: Paul, when you first tried this, was it on stage or just for fun at home?

Paul:  I started playing Dungeons and Dragons in college. My shy friend invited me over to play as a character in his DnD game, seeing him open up and embody the characters of his world made me realize something was special about this game.

TQC: Are you surprised by the reaction to this show? Did you ever think you would be able to take D&D on a tour?

Paul: Yes, surprised and delighted! This is our first time taking the show on tour, so much like the Orks of Warhammer 40k we are contributing to the psychic manifestation of our collective desires, and presuming the show is on tour, and thus it is now on tour!

TQC: Do you have any thoughts on other games to explore with your comedy and Drag Queens?

Paul: I am curious to integrate elements from other tabletop games like Pathfinder and Warhammer- I like using a vastly simplified ruleset of 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons though since it is very approachable and easy for new audience members to grasp what’s going on.

TQC: Now that this concept is so successful and you are flipping a world-famous game on its head what is in store for Paul?

Paul: Hmm, I think the show has an incredible amount of room to grow and improve, I think we have just scratched the surface of what a show like DNDQ can offer to the world. As for my other pursuits, I would like to muster up the courage to film and upload an hour comedy special of my personal stand-up (I’m also a comedian).

TQC:  What can Spokane expect from this show when you and your Drag Queens come through?

Paul: Dungeons and Drag Queens is best described to the unfamiliar as a two-hour improv comedy show starring Drag Queens with a layer of rules designed to resemble a board/video game. That being said, Dungeons and Drag Queens is a show that will delight DnD fans, Drag Fans, and comedy fans alike. Similar to Dungeons and Dragons, I think you really have to experience it to understand it. Once you see it, it will click and you will join the adventure!

Now that I have extracted all the secrets from Dungeon Master Paul, once you see the show tell me how we save those poor defenseless Drag Queens from this crazy comedian Paul Curry. Remember,  I need your support so sneak in so go buy a ticket (this is sneaky cause they will think you are a patron and not a secret soldier set to rescue the Drag Queens) and please be sure to pretend to enjoy the show. You need to see the horror these Drag Queens are subjected to so we can whisk them off to safety.

Know Our History!

By Daniel Coriell also known as

Harvey Milk

As we begin Pride month, we need to take time to reflect on our past leaders that have paved the way for us to be able to be who we are; out, proud and loud. We must never allow the hate and bigotry to silence us again. We will never go back! As a gay man at the ripe age oftwenty two, born in the 21st century, who grew up closeted in a small rural town in easternWashington I will admit I don’t know a lot about gay history. One man that I have learnedwas a real trailblazer was the great Harvey Milk. Being a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, I took the time to educate myself on this remarkable person. He impacted so many of us, even in my generation, as he afforded us the opportunity and the inspiration to proudly be who we are. That lesson continues to be important even now. I wanted to remind us of what he got us through and how it continues to be relevant.

Before Harvey Milk became the man we know he was a nearly forty year old man in a lackluster job, closeted, and afraid of being who he truly was……sound familiar? Like many of us Harvey had a realization that at forty it was time to stop living as what he was told to be and to start actually enjoying life as his authentic self, to allow himself to be happy. So he packed up and moved with his new lover across the country in hopes of a happier, more authentic life. What he was welcomed with was the same hate he was trying to flee from. This new found out and proud Harvey was no longer going to be silent; he knew it was time to fight. After many failed attempts at pursuing public office he was able to become the first openly gay elected official. His most notable challenge, besides being an openly gay man in politics, was Proposition 6 which proposed to ban gays and lesbians (even perceived) from working within the California public school system. His opponents would claim that the gay teachers were exposing children to being gay in order to try to convert them. Now doesn’t that sound all too familiar? Harvey was able to ignite a spark under the people still in the dark by being loud, out, and proud. He rallied the gay community together, which in return shut down prop 6. This truly just goes to show when we unite there is nothing we can’t do.

You all might be thinking okay why is this young man preaching to us about things that so many of us already know? Well I wanted to remind us all of our past because it is quite relevant within today’s current events. After our huge win in 2015 with gay marriage being legalized. Almost ten years later they are once again trying to keep us down and trying to silence us from being out and proud anywhere. It seems as if we are again fighting the same fight that Harvey fought so long ago. This Pride Month we need to show the World we will NOT go back and that it is time to march again and be even louder, more out, and proud. I leave you with some wise words that ring so true even today, as the great Harvey Milk would say; “I recruit you!”
